Hello All, This year it was my first Annual Appraisal in which there were few points provided to me as feedback from my manager. Among all those , few of the points i do agree but there were few pointer which i did not agree to . On which i responded that " I will think on this & will do analysis " . Kindly let me know if this statement is unprofessional in Corporate or is it Incorrect statement which i should have not used ?

Dear Diya,

Before sending a communication to your manager, you have sought advice or suggestion from the members of the general HR forum. This is appreciable. Your post indicates how conscious you are on choice of your words.

Coming to your query. Manager is a superior person and his/her feedback has to be taken seriously. You say that on few points you agree and on few points you do not. But then there are two things about your non-acceptance. One is that you have evidence to prove that there are no shortcomings in your personality or the work that you do. Another is that you do not have any evidence but you just "think" that there are no shortcomings.

There is always a difference between what we are and what others think what we are. Through our unconscious behaviour, we send signals to others. First opinions and then attitude is developed based on the pattern that is formed out of these signals.

Your post was about construction of sentence on how to communicate disagreement to your manager. However, in my reply, I am challenging your self-assumptions. If you had evidence to the contrary of what manager told you, you could have asked permission to provide evidence. Did the PA meeting happen face-to-face or manager has sent you a mail or PA?

As a alternative, you may ask for one more meeting with the manager. Tell your manager that you wish to obtain clarification on few points. Provide evidence to him/her however, tell him/her politely that this is neither your counter nor confrontation but attempt to bring to fore few facts.

Before you send any mail or ask for the meeting, you may go through the following article on Wikipedia on "Defence Mechanism":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defence_mechanisms

Please check whether your request on this post is result of your defence mechanism.

Lastly, if you wish to be diplomatic, then you may send your manager a simple mail stating "noted the feedback".

All the best!
