My question is for I.R. people.
I want to know what is difference between registered union, recognised union and affiliated union?
As I am much confuse about it i request all seniors to guide on same.

(a) A registered union is one which got itself registered under the Trade Unions Act,1926.
(b) A recognized union is one which is recognized as the collective bargaining agent on behalf of the workmen by the employer of the industrial establishment wherein it functions.
(c) An affiliated union is that which stands affiliated to a particular Federation of Trade Unions.

To add what has been stated -
In an industry, factory or estt. there could be more than one regd. union. Among them many might have affiliation to various Federations/parties like, INTUC, AITUC etc.
When so many regd.unions are active, the employer/estt. will have problem during negotiations with unions who might take diff.position on a particular issue making consensus rarest. In order to minimize this difficulty an election (secret ballot) is conducted to elect a single regd.union among those unions under the direct supervision of the ALC/LO. Thus an elected regd. union is declared as a "Recognised union" for the duration of say 4 yrs. which functions as a single bargaining agency, official union, with whom the employer will interact for all purposes, get the bi/tri-lateral agreements signed for implementation which has to be accepted/ applicable commonly for all unions/employees irrespective of their membership of various other unions as well.

1. As regards recognised union, the concept of recognition by employer as collective bargaining agent has no meaning. In India, in many states like Maharashtra, Kerala etc. there are special laws relating to Recognition of Trade Unions and recognition to a union is granted by the Court and not by Employer. The Union which wants to be recognised in any industry or in a concern, has to apply to the court and upon fulfilling conditions such as majority of membership, not participating in any illegal strike etc, the Court grants recognition. So it is not Employer who grants recognition but the Court.
2. Incidently, the definition of Union is not restricted to union of workers, but employers also can come together and form a trade union which can be legally registered under Trade Unions Act.
