Nothing new under Indian scenario what employees thinks about the employee engagement, they believe that engagement activities are only the party, outing, birthday celebration etc.But its a HR responsibility to make people understand what exactly is employee engagements during the induction phase only and all the types of activities which company provides under this head.Yes it is a time taking process for old sectors. There should be a clear massage what exactly employee engagement means.
"Employee engagement is a workplace approach designed to ensure that employees are committed to their organisation's goals and values, motivated to contribute to organisational success, and are able at the same time to enhance their own sense of well-being".

Normally under the employee engagement activities, we include programs which are designed for the well-being of individuals. Eg. Health , Safety, personal effectiveness, Awareness sessions in respect of substance abuse, financial planning, etc. Such employee engagement activities motivate employees and we also see improved attendance and performance. By way of such programs, Management shows that they care for their employees. Some organisations extend Wellness programs to their families also by conducting Career counselling for children, Stress Management, Hobby Workshops for the spouses, etc. Shop floor employees are normally the neglected lot and Organisations must take interest in conducting such activities for them. Personal development is essential along with professional growth.

As per my opinion for Manufacturing Industry, HR should invite family member of worker / employee and plan an event for them. Some competition of employee's children should be real fun. The evet should end with Dinner / Snacks. This will help organization lots by emotional involvement of their staff. Also you may plann Outdoor games / competition like Cricket Tounament, Volleyball Tournament, etc. You may plan Picnic on Sunday for them.
I strongly feel this is the role of HR department and make workers / employees out of stress.

i agree with BMKANAY reply........ at plant level more or less employee are not released in their shift timings. So employee engagement due shifts is quite difficult to manage. You need to take help of the line managers at location in aligning employee after shifts for their engagement. You can also hold a monthly engagement event in which you have rewards some employees for their achievements during the month in order to motivate other employee for higher productivity. Holding a small party with some activities etc etc..
