I am working as a senior consultant in an leading software MNC in Bangalore. I am currently pregnent and my manger is asking for the Maternity leave plan from the begining of 3 rd month itself.. I am planning to take ML around june end (9 th month) and informed my manager about the ML plan. I have already provided KT for the back ups. Can i be released from the project and moved to bench before taking ML .. i would like to know if there is any rule in place to move me to bench without my concern.

Dear 25101978,
Getting released from project and movement to bench is the internal matter of your company. It is out of purview of Maternity Benefit Act, 1961.
Did you talk to manager and ask for release from the project? What are his views? His concern could be getting the right replacement for you.
Thanks,

HI Divekar,
Thanks for your reply. I have not asked for Release from the project , My manager wants to give me additional roles and responsibilites 2 months before to me. After knowing my Pregnancy, they called me for a meeting and asked for the ML plan, i told i will be able to work for 5 more months, but within a month they arranged KT and got the knowledge transferred and planned to release me from the project, as i do working from home . This is something like after knowing pregnancy they do not want to consider me..

Dear 25101978,

What type of work to assign, whom to assign, when to assign etc are the internal matters of the company. Your management or manager is within their rights to do so. Linking it to Maternity Leave does not sustain in the eyes of the law.

Every manager expects continuity in the work. Couple of months later you will go on long leave on account of your maternity. Against this backdrop, possibly they might have taken this decision well in advance in order to groom your replacement.

Since you are out of project does it mean that you are on the bench? Being on bench is the worst thing that any software professional will desire. But then we need to strike balance between events of life and career events. Former has to be given primacy over latter.

These are not the times wherein you should beset yourself with career worries. Your maternal responsibility has already started. This new responsibility demands to be free from tension. Therefore, leave those worries for the future, be happy and be ready to welcome a newcomer to your home :-)

All the best!
