Dear Friend

The Labor Welfare Officer is a statutory position that is required to be filled by an employer as per the provisions made under the Factories Act, 1948 and Rules made there under. Basically, LWO is supposed to take a care about statutory welfare as well as non statutory welfare of employees in the organisation which he was appointed. Generally, this position is to be reported to HR dept and GM-HR / Manager-HR will be his boss. In some companies, this professional is required to report directly to the unit head as per their organisation structure. However, terms and conditions of this position is strictly governed by Factories rules with regard to his / her appointment, termination and salary etc. Any employer can easily fill up this position and where as it is very difficult for him to terminate his services unless he follows the procedure as laid down under factories act.

Every body in HR knows that labor welfare is one the function of HR dept, professional in this area would have limited exposure when compare with HR generalist role. However, in major companies this professional will also rose up to Chief Welfare Officer where the employees of such company exceeds 1000 or more and plays an important role in administering statutory and non statutory welfare facilities and will commend the respect of all employees.
