Dear Seniors, Does an individuals appraisals (Performance or Annual Appraisal) depends on immediate supervisor’s performance at work? Kindly Advice.
From India, Kalyan
Dear Chetna,

Your query is very brief. Please provide us following information:

a) Nature of industry

b) Name of the department in which these two individuals work

c) Designation and KRAs of the immediate supervisor

d) Designation and KRAs of the junior

e) In what context have you raised this query, was it related to the performance bonus for the department? Is it that junior worked well but HOD or some other manager did not perform well and the whole department is deprived of the performance bonus?

General comments: - In general terms to answer your query it can be said "No". Department's manager is responsible to provide the guidance and assistance the juniors to elevate their performance. However, it does not mean that individual's appraisal depends on his/her supervisor's performance. Take the simple case of Account Executive or Account Assistant. He/she may be good at making entries in General Ledger or any other work like Accounts Payable or Accounts Receivable. However, in what way this position is responsible if Head Accounts make mistakes in preparation of Balance Sheet or P & L Account?

Ok...

Hi Chetna Kapita,
Mr Dinesh Divekar has given you a long clear reply to your brief query.
The very purpose of creating KRAs for every one separately, before the beginning of an assessment year, is to make sure that individuals are accountable for whatever Goals that are set under their KRA. I would venture to say the reverse, as an answer to your query. If an individual performs brilliantly or miserably the partial effect would get carried forward to the superior.
To illustrate, I would like to give an example. Suppose four engineers report to a Manager.
Three of them have done well and one of them is assessed as below par with respect to the set Goals and KRAs. The weighted average impact would go to the Manager. In the event of all the four engineers meeting the agreed Goals and KRAs, the Manager would stand to get benefitted.

Dear colleague,
Directly & indirectly,the superior's performance,does play a part,in determining how well/how not well an individual performs.
Difficult to envisage performance appraisal, exclusively determined on individual performance.
