Dear All,
Need a suggestion, opinion and review about the possibilities of value addition in PhD in HR. I am planning to go Australia and do my PhD in HR field, an avid HR enthusiast with under-graduation, post-graduation, internships and projects in HR adding to this i have 2 years 9 months experience in HR work. I am a bit confused whether i need to pursue my PhD in HR or to continue working and whether it adds any value to my career profile.

If your question is from knowledge perspective, then any higher qualification to enhance one's knowledge in a subject of one's interest is always welcome.If your query is from the perspective of advancing your career as HR professional in corporate world, my reply will be slightly different. Employers expect a professional to add value to their business. To add value to the business, the HR professional shall have the competencies to deliver outcomes that can be aligned to their business.Competencies can be developed by the HR professionals through exposure and experience by actually working through situations and challenges.. I remember a story which I read some where that runs like this.---

Once a scholar in Astronomy working abroad as a research fellow, came to India to visit his village.To reach his village, he had to cross a small river. Therefore, he engaged a boat that ferries passengers to his village.He got into the boat which was manned by a boy. and the boat started sailing in a pleasant weather. The scholar had a very poor opinion about not so well lettered village folk and look down up on them and did not let any opportunity go to flaunt his knowledge and ridicule the ignorance of villagers.So he asked the boy who was manning the boat skillfully what he knows about stars, Moon,Sun and planets.The boy expressed his ignorance.He got a chance to taunt him. He said " look since you did not study, you had no knowledge of them and you.had to do be content with the job of ferrying passengers.Look at me.I went abroad.Studied astronomy and I am well placed.". In the mean time, the weather had suddenly changed and dark clouds started hovering in the sky and there were winds speeding at 200 K.Ms per hour, rocking the boat menacingly.They were in the middle of the stream.The boy said to the scholar " it seems we are in the middle of a storm and the boat is going to sink. Do you know swimming since that is the only way to save your life by swimming ashore.".The scholar replied " I did'nt know".The boy said " but,I know swimming. Here I go and good luck to you".The rest is obvious to any body.

It is this ability and competency to sail smoothly through challenges which the employers look for. It is this knowledge that is capable of being applied as skill to steer clear of the hurdles which the employers search for in candidates. I refrain from advising any thing.I only inform you as to what the employers want in corporate world. Therefore I leave it to you to take a call.However a Ph.D will definitely add value to a HR's profile if he has already acquired demonstrable skills that he can bring to bear on practical situations in his work life.
