Dear Seniors,
I am doing internship in one of the biggest hotel. The project that has been given to me by the GM is to analyze all the settlement done with the union so far financialy and in other repect. However I am struck in the project and not getting how to move further with it. The company has only one union. I have all the data of how different components are changing yearly and with every settlement but what should I analyze with this? On what factors is this increase in salary n benefits actualy related? Also is it possible to conduct a survry for the same as my college want us to do a survey.
Please guide me in this.. I am in big dilemma..

A settlement is a peaceful means of settling workers demands on various terms of employment and conditions of service by way of negotiation and agreement between the management and the union. Thus the object of a settlement is to set at rest an industrial dispute and ensure harmony in industrial relations in the establishment and consequently productivity of employees..All these settlements will have financial implications Each settlement is based on the spirit of 'give and take'.Probably you need to analyse the settlements with these factors in view. Therefore a suggested structure for analysis can be --

1) What are the general nature of demands that were the subject matter of settlements? whether it is for wage revision or for bonus or for leave and holidays or medical facilties or on disciplinary issues like suspension and dismissals etc. You can classify the demands as financial, disciplinary and welfare related This analysis may help know the management the nature of demands.

2)How many of the demands are repetitive in nature and the reasons therefor? This may help know the management the management the financial implication of such recurring demands and to the reasons for it so that it can take a view about such demands in future.

3)What is the financial implication of each settlement for the company?

4) Since a settlement is based on the spirit of "give and take", what are the items on which the union has agreed to meet the demands of the management? Whether they met their obligations?)Whether there is any increase in productivity or production after each settlement.or improvement in customer service or more business etc.

5) Whether each settlement ensured peaceful industrial relations or led to more demands? whether there were any agitations also after each settlement? if so why? or whether it led to more business and better customer service or reduced absenteeism etc.

You can build structure on the basis of your study.Hope this helps.

The agreement must be based on cost of living and industry scenario. Study this. Also, survey may be conducted inside as well as outside organisation.

Dear Anushka,

Mr.Saikumar has brought out almost all the important points to be taken into a/c while analysing the settlements effected with the trade union over a period of time so as to assess their overall implications on the industry; well. Hotel industry is gaining unprecedented momentum now-a-days because of globalisation and shifts in the consumption pattern of the general public in equal proportions. In so far as lodging is concerned, the frequent travels both scheduled and unscheduled facilitated by the shrinkage in distance due to faster modes of transport compel the guests to expect finer comforts and better service from hoteliers. About boarding, I need not dwell much for every one of us knows well the mush-room growth of multi-cuisine and luxury restaurants everywhere. So, the work culture in catering industry has undergone a sea-change. The employees have to be academically well-qualified and have to be more service-oriented than in the past. That's what Saikumar high-lighted in his 4th point. A question may arise in your mind as a typical and disturbed manager: Can't we do it without a union?. Think it over.
