Dear Sir/mam,

I, Pratik Agarwal, a student of 1st yr. B.Com at St. Xaviers College, Kolkata(India), am currently doing a project on 'Shopping Behavior of College-goers of Kolkata with respect to Casual clothes and Influence of external factors on them'.

I have searched all the reputed libraries of my city and have not been able to find or come across any scales on the objectives I have finalized. I was searching the internet, when I came across your wonderful site. I think you can provide me with a few scales that can help me with my project. Sir I am just 18 yrs. old and doing a project requires some expertise that I think I don't have, but with your esteemed help I can become successful.

The scales, I require, are:

1> Shopping companions(friends, mom, dad, siblings etc.) and their influence

2> Purpose of shopping(including window-shopping and shopping for hedonistic reasons)

3> Costumer influences(ie. what the other costumers shopping at the shop think)

4> Peer-influence(inter-personal)

5> Choice of shopping destinations(location, distance, features etc)

6> Price-conciousness (with frequency of purchase)

Sir, it would be extremely kind of you if u could help me in this project. Looking forward to a favourable response.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

Pratik Agarwal.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, but just came across your post. I think your deadline for the project must have been over. I am a student myself and have done quite a few projects on marketing. Some suggestions are:

1. Primary Research should be your main tool of collecting information. Focus your questionnaire around your project objectives. Since you have chosen the college customer behaviour in Kolkatta, you could look at a few areas which represent the entire city. Basically, sample your market. I would recommend a sample size of not less than 80.

2. To add some theory on customer behaviour, you could look at the most basic book in marketing by Philip Kotler. A lot of articles and research would be available off the net.

To make it easier, you can send off questionnaires within your college, to your friends and batchmates. Also, the target places to get your questionnaire filled is obviously outside malls and crowded shopping centres especially around weekend evenings and Sunday mornings. Also look for people with company, friends, siblings, parents/guardians etc.

As said before, I really don't know how useful this reply is going to be as your deadline has most likely ended. But I hope it helped.

Regards,

Vinisha.

hi
Thanks for the reply, and my project date is no way near over...i still have a lot of time in hand(but u know how time flies).
By the way thnks for the suggestions....
I m looking for a sample size of 400 students(200 of both sex).
My primary reseach for literature study is almost over, but what I need are the scales tht i'll require for the questionaire formation. I was planning to build my own questionaire, a prof. has said that a lot of research goes into building the scales(ie. the statement form questionaire). Ill be looking forward for ur reply

Hi,
Sample size of 400 is a pretty good target you are aiming at. As suggested earlier, your questionnaire must be focussed on the objective of your project, that is, the 6 pointers you have listed. Assuming you have no secondary data to rely upon, your primary research must have a subjective element to it. Also, the basis of customer behaviour remains the same, hence, objectivity is quite easy to achieve. We usually have used the scales allowing people to rate from 1-5, 1 being the lowest/ worst/ least likely. However, I would not be able to suggest much as to the rating scale without looking at the questions in your questionnaire.

Hi Vinisha,

Thanks for all your help. The thing is, now I have taken one more project with this one, as an internship project with a big MNC. I will be working out in the retail clothes segment of their company. We have been asked to do following things in their project:

1) Profiling of the costumers who visit their stores in City Centre(a shopping mall)

2) External influences on the shopping behaviour of the costumers(usually young professionals in the age group of 25-40)

3) Finding out, if their brand ambassador(a bollywood actor) is taken as a style icon for clothes.

At this moment, I am searching for

1) The items I can use for profiling the costumers(ex: age group, cloth preference etc.)

2) The questionairres that can be found on the given objectives in previous or world-wide accepted literatures.

3) ....and seeking permission of the people in this site if they will pre-test my questionairre.

I will be looking forward to your help on this topic, and please tell me a few good sites or books where I can find all the necessary questionairre and a few parametres for costumer profiling.

Regards,

Pratik
