Trushna,
Depending on your city check the professional tax rate slab...
In Mumbai, people earning salary more than 10,000 gross pays a professional tax of 2500 annually (200 pm from march - jan and 300 for feb)
Alos note that PT is not deducted on pro-rata basis, it's a fixed amount.
So even if the person works for only 2-3 days of a months and gets salary for that month, we are to deduct PT for that month... So it is immaterial about 15 days of work....
From your profile, I believe you are from delhi and so is your firm.... I have found an article that states that PT is not applicable in New Delhi.... Check it at - What is Professional Tax and Professional Tax Slab Rate in India?
Hope this helps you...

Dear Trushna,
Let's first understand what is Professional Tax? Professional Tax is a tax which is levied by the state on the income earned by way of profession, trade, calling or employment. This tax is levied based on slab rates depending on the income of the individuals.
It is not applicable to all the states. Also it's slab varies from state to state. In some states professional Tax is nil upto a certain income. Also time to time this slab use to get revised. You can easily get this slab on internet but make sure site is authenticated and that slab is updated one.
As far as your question is concerned you need to mention this employee location.
You just check slab of that state and based on his income you need to deduct the amount.
Professional Tax deducted need to be submitted on time.

Dear Trushna,
Kindly note that the Professional Tax is applicable on the basis of earnings.
In case of you are in Maharashtra then Monthly salary is Rs.8000 for 15 days it will be Rs 4000. It is less than Rs.5000 then no PT is applicable in this case.
The same logic should be applied from which State you are belongs to.

You have quoted that PT is to be deducted based on days one has worked..
However, while I joined one of my office on 26th of the month and worked only for 4 days, my PT for that month as well was deducted... My monthly salary that time was 15,000 and I am sure 4 days salary will not cross prescribed 5000 limit to make me eligible to pay PT for the month....
Do you have any source that mentions PT is to be paid on pro-rata basis because I had always been under impression that PT is to be paid on whole amount irrespective if we work for full month or if we work partially...
Would appreciate if you can share the source of information and help me clear my doubts...
