Dear Aamir,
Health Insurance is more useful as, if there is a serious illness, than OPD is not useful, but the a hospital admission is necessary. Also this enables us to limit our liability only to the extent of the premium of the insurance and most of the time this can be still reduced by making the employee a part of the premium amt. The Health insurance also covers his family and therefore it is much preferable.

Mr Ali,
Before seeking any answer by others, i believe first you must express yourself on how and why you feel direct OPD facility will better than obtaining Health Insurances for your Employees?
Second, I want to know what you mean by OPD and what role employer play while providing OPD facility to employees at them time of NEED or generally.

First : If we look at a larger picture, OPD Allowance is claimed more as compared to Hospitalization Insurance. less then 5% to 10 % employee in a medium sized firm claim Hospitalization Insurance per month, but more than 40% employee claim OPD allowance per month.
Second: OPD allowance which i am refering to is the allowance which an employee claims from the organization at the end of the month for the Doctors visit he/she or his / her family (Wife & childrens) made and all the related medical expense.
People with Family usually find themselves short of money after they spent a considerable amount of thier pay on medical expences. This OPD expence help them to recover that cost to an extend.

well before going further I want you to go and read any Health Insurance benefits (and terms & Conditions) to an employee and other available in your country.
Second, how much allowances (Medical Reimbursement) you are supposed to offer to your employees.
-Will this OPD option be enough /available to bear the expenses if any employee gets hospitalization with some reasons or with any disease and hospital charges.
-Do you really think that the coverage or limit of expenses that Insurance Company can bear at the need of it by any employee, you (Employer) can bear at your end by using OPD Allowance or
-would it be count in OPD facilities?
Study these questions posted above very carefully and not just need to work with calculation of charges but to look for the benefits of employee whom you are responsible and agreed to provide health & safety securities.

The cost towards OPD are miniscule compared to the cost setback from hospitalisation which can run into lakhs. Earlier OPD covers were not available. Albeit, today there are service providers who for a reasonable membership fee provide provide free consultation and discounts at medical and dental clinics, labs, and pharmacies. Many companies accept OPD, dental, and optical bills which are either completely re-imbursed by the company or a tax deduction is provided as per IT laws.Hope this helps. All the best.

Hi All
Another point for your consideration. There are many health insurance providers who have earmarked a certain small portion for Non hospitalization reimbursements and the rest for hospitalization.
As rightly pointed out, it is the hospitalization charges that run into lakhs, and hence difficult for employees to bear. Also, many service providers even provide cashless hospitalization facility as against mere reimbursement. That is, the hospital submits the bills directly to the service provider and the employee doesn't have to pay the bills.
Insurance is any day better than a medical allowance from the employee perspective.
Cheers!

You may want to provide opd facility. The question is whether the employer is ready to bare the cost. Where a hospitalisation cover would cost 5-10,000 per year per employee (group covers are much lower, actually). Opd will cost significantly more. For it to be effective, you are talking of probably 5000 per month is reimbursements. Is the employer willing to take that cost ?
