Continuing with his populist scheme, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday promised free gloves, helmets, slippers and cycles to the construction workers.

Naveen made this announcement addressing a meeting of the Odisha Nirman Mazdoor Sabha (ONMS) here. The Government will build 50 shelter houses for the construction workers during 2013-14. The Government will provide the required land, he said.

Remembering the steps taken by his late father Biju Patnaik for the betterment of workers, Naveen said a country cannot develop by keeping the workers unhappy. He also doubled the assistance provided to the workers by the Construction Worker Welfare Board.

The assistance includes Rs 80,000 for construction of house, Rs 10,000 for marriage of daughters, Rs 2 lakh for the family if a worker dies in accident while on duty and Rs 1 lakh for the family for natural death of a worker. Besides, provision has been made for treatment of seriously ill workers and education of their children. The board was

constituted in 2008 and now has a fund of Rs 320 crore.

President of the Sabha Utkalmani Satpathy presided over the meeting. Labour and Employment Minister Bijoyshree Routray, board president Jogendra Tripathy, BJD legislator Prafulla Kumar Mallik and secretary of the Sangha Rajendra Kumar Das also addressed the meeting, among others.
