A background verification involves knowing about the candidate.
If you are having experience and are or were working formerly / previously, they would require references from your work place who could give information on
1. Your Date of Join
2. Your tenure there
3. Your roles & responsibilities
4. Your achievements & credibility
and other things
If however you are a fresher, you should provide references of your professors who knows you.
The process should be over in 3 to 7 days depending on the intensity and importance of the verification details and the work pressure they already have.
