Hi,
In the works of any entity (company, association, corporation, school, college, hospital, foundation, etc.), the Administration is in charge of the organizing, decision-making, control, supervision, growth, and basically the overall performance and well-being of the entity.
Human Resources is only a branch or department of the entity. Its purpose revolves around the people that work for the entity--employees, laborers, administrators, and so on.Human Resources part is in charge of supervising these people, assuring work environment quality (individual and collective), searching for new and efficient resources (new employees, so to speak), and everything else related while also remaining in accord with the Adminitration's requests/preferences/policies and with the law.

I think the difference between Admin and HR has also to do with separation of interests:
1. HR makes promises to the employees about work environment and perks, and Admin tries to keep the promises within available resources. So, HR displays an optimistic approach whereas Admin displays a pessimistic approach in taking care of employee needs.
2. Metaphorically speaking, if man is a computer with mind as software and body as hardware, HR is the software engineering and Admin is the hardware engineering.
3. Finally, HR needs to justify when employee finds a gap between what he expected from the company and what he is getting. Also, employee needs to explain his performance gap between what is expected from him and what he could deliver. Go ahead guys, blame it on the Admin problems! It is the easiest way out for all.

Hats off to U BhaktiNarang, How much patience and time U got to put in such an elaborate reply. Hu. Good job.
However friends there is only a very thin line between these two. Many firms have both blended into one dept. There is no hard and fast rule who should do what. It's all depend on the history and convenience and CEO's preference and administrative convenience of the corporation. To define HR function in a line, it's everything related to HRD and Admn. means administering everything incl.that of HR, Finance, Production, sales, services and admn.
Is't clear ? I doubt.

Dear Madhura,
While appreciating your sarcastic comments, I have one comment:
H.R HIGHLY RATED ( HR PEOPLE THINK LIKE THIS ONLY)
ADMIN: THANKLESS JOB.
WHATEVER YOU SAY AS ADMIN MANAGER PEOPLE FIND A WHOLE IN THAT AND NO ONE APPRECIATE.... OUR JOB IS INVISIBLE BUT OUR JOB MISTAKES VISIBLE TO OTHERS ALWAYS AND ... no one say thanks to Admin Dept...

When the queriest sought to know the difference between Administration and HRM in all it's seriousness, it is disappointing to see some sarcastic remarks in expaining the distinction between the two.If one wants to know the ditinction between the two, one should see rajusiachen's succinct one line statement, followed by Bhaktinarang's exhaustive list, elaborating the said statement.

Dear Prabhunadh,
There is no such difference in between HR & Admin, they both are under one term called HRD but, functionally you can define them as Admin, Operation, Compensation & Benefits and Recruitment and many more names cane be generated.
As said all comes under one umbrella of HRD.
Where Admin is responsible for facility management, rest of the name like Operation which is basically responsible for Payroll and Statutory Compliance, Recruitment for Hiring and C&B for performance Management and etc.
Hence don't get confused, this is just about a terminology which is being generated as we are day by day trying to facilitate our service by its virtue.

From India, Delhi
The admin department is at the top of all company decisions and functions involved while the Human Resource department is just one of these departments that comes under the admin and supervises people and manages human resource in that company.
