Dear all,
I have just joined a small firm as an HR Executive where in there are 20 to 25 employees working. I am directly reporting to the Director. Most of the employees are working here from past 6-7 years and hence play a imp role in the company. One of them is a poen, I must say he is talented, hardworking but very very rude by nature. He doesnt have any manners to speak to others(especially new joinees) maybe coz he feels that he is an old employee. sadly, his attitude towards me is the same which for obviously reasons I dont like. when the boss is not around he plays music soo loudly (that too gazals, folk songs) i dont know abt others but i get really disturbed. Now, I feel that being just 2 month old if i complain abt him, i dont know how people will see tghis as...
Really need your advise on this...
Thanks.

Hi Geetika,
Speak to your colleagues whether r they also facing problem... If yes, then please go ahead n inform management regarding the same... As u work as HR you must inform all these to management n keep them posted whats happening in office premises.

Rude behaviour needs to be reported to the managers
Also if you are getting disturbed with behaviour that does not meet the office decorum, it needs to be taken up with the management.
To give an example, my mom faced so liar situation when she joined her last company (about 25 years ago). The Poen in office used to think himself as indespensible and was rude, arrogant and in general refused to follow instructions. My mom told him clearly that she expected him to behave Ian proper manner and do,the work as instructed. When that didnt work, she reported to the sales manager in charge of the office. One warning from the manager, the guy changed his behaviour immediately and from that point ensured he treated my mom with respect.
You however, need to take a call on this keeping in mind your circumstances, attitude of the manager and the hierarchy. Whether others will back you up is another matter to consider

Dear Ms Banerjee,
Exactly my point, i dont know whether others will support me on this or not for one reason i m new to this company and others including the poen is working from last 7 years, infact when he listens to the songs nobody utters a word.
Still atleast now i am confident that my approach towards this is correct. I will wait for next few days and will directly approach my senior on this.
Thanks you all for ur support and kind advice. really appreciate it. For executive like us attimes since we r new to the organization, we are scared to take a robust decision, but wen we speak to others atleast we come to know whether we are taking a right decision or not.
Thanks once again

dear geetika,

as you are saying that you are new to the company, first of all try to observe the mentalty of the people who are working there for the last five years and you will come to the difference. when your experience adds you will be seeing lot of such issues during your sail, every person will have some defect in their routine just find that strong defect so called loophole and pressurise him on that such that he should understand why he was pointed now and then. people will depend upon their talent if they have enough worth and these sort of guys will depend upon the experience they have as they are not worth enough. you may not get proper result on complaining about him and moreover if he found that you had given complaint on him then he increases his rude behaviour making you as target therefore it leads to furthur depression to you so in a tactical and intelligent way like protest one of the senior employees who his very much closer to the boss to tell him about his behaviour and make sure that your should not come out.

No matter, whether you are a new employee or not. If you are so much disturbed, there is no point of waiting & my advice is that you better report verbally to the concerned person. In some organizations, the peons are playing a key role with the support & good will of employers, as they gets feedback abt. an employee thru peons. Moreover, there might be employees among the group, who are disturbed but they can't respond since no support is given by others. When you get a chance to share things with them, you will get an idea abt, their views.

Dear Geetika & others: As you are an HR professional, your first duty is to bring him in line with the organisation. As you say he is a good worker, so it all the more necessary t6hat behaves himself. So you need to confront him and tell him to stop. The more you tolerate this sort of non-sense, the more such irritants would follow. There are some such characters in every organisation who try to test the endurance limit of new comers. But you need to tackle it tactfully but firmly. Prepare well for such an eventuality and call him to your office and tell him on the face that this is not acceptable, every office needs to have certain decorum and decency. If all your persuasive efforts fail, then go to the higher boss. All the best.

Hi Geetika,
I feel that it is HR's duty to set these kind of people right. Take it as a learning opportunity and tell him that he can not speak to you like this. Make him understand that you have your own value in the company. If his rude behavior continues, speak to the person whom he is reporting and then your boss if necessary. You should handle this case on your own rather than involving many people. All the very best to you :)

Dear Geetika

These are situations which are not taught in any HR curriculum. However, these situations are very real.

There is no unique way or a single prescription to deal with such cases. Such situations get solved if one "leads" by example.

What kind of personality do you project? If you are perceived as a "no nonsense", punctual, disciplined and dedicated HR; then whatever you say shall carry weight.

You just have to tell him firmly but politely that his music distracts you from your official duties and he should use 'headphones' instead of disturbing others.

About his rude behaviour; it is difficult to say anything, unless you quote the verbal exchange verbatim.

Suffice to say that it can be a perceptual error on your part. also, consider the fact that he is a peon and his way of talking is a reflection of his socio-economic background. It is futile to expect a polished behaviour comparable to that of an executive.

Try to deal with this issue with compassion and empathy; and I am confident of your success.

Do feel free to give your feedback on the developments.

Warm regards.
