Hello Everyone,
We are going to start Reference Checking of new recruits in house.
Can anybody guide me what question should we ask and how should we ask these questions. (How to ask these questions in a right/proper way.)
Awaiting for your valuable guidance.

Ref checks are usually carried out on phone.

The references need to be people who have worked with the candidates and know them professionally.

During a call ask if it is ok to speak to the reference at that point of time. if ok, introduce yourself and the purpose of the call.

(Do not say we have selected XYZ for ABC position. Always say we are considering XYZ for a position in our Co.)

Assure the reference about the ref check being confidential.

Start with open ended questions like

How do you know XYZ ?

What makes him/her sucessful?

What are his strengths?

What according to you can make him a better professional? (This is to know the weaknesses.

Comment on leadership Skills

How does he/she conduct himself as a team member?

How are his/her relations with his peers (from other depts?

If an opportunity arises will you hire him/her?

Thumb rules in a ref check

Let the reference speak more.

Discuss rather than ask.

Always ask the reference his current designation and Company.

Conclude by asking him if you need anymore info can you call him again?

Hope this is useful to get you started...

Regards,

Anand
