You friend who is doing the MPhil should have been given some idea by her supervisor in the institution where she is doing the course. Has she access to any organisation where she can conduct research? If so, has she no mentor there?
She should read some recent articles to find what others have done, how, and why that way in the networking field. Usually, they suggest gaps in the field that require further investigation. From those gaps she can pick one that interests her.

And Mr Devbass, I beg your pardon but I dont believe on theory that you have given here or your friend has said to you bcz it is not possible that one been assigned some work but have no guideline provided by their University/ Mentor and Supervisor of responsible institute.
Please shares more details, and answer the questions of Mr. Simhan first and also I would suggest you to speak to your friend and try to get the real problem or situation.
Second, ask her to meet her Mentor or authorised and responsible person for this at her University/Institute to get the same.
Hope you know that M.Phil. is a lesser degree than a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) which is also a research work and this is not a small course of study or something like but much more then a simple DEGREE (based on several years of research of a subject with great understanding and concept)
She is not an undergraduate student who can’t understand the concept of her study what she has intended to do even though the research/project/assignment work is assigning to school student today. She needs to recognize this reality first. As Mr. Simhan said that she can go for recent Articles and details and development of the subject (Networking Field) to preform her job. She has already archived many things in her life as she is doing Mphil, she can get the idea herself to proceed further. She can be confused or maybe losing her confidence and this making her like this but there is definitely nothing like she doesn’t know how to do a research work or study.
