I've joined in an manufacturing organization, this was an MNC based at chennai. After joining I came to know that I have been recruited instead of a person who met with an accident 2 months back & was hospitalized till now [ btw he was getting his treatment by corporate insurance scheme ]. The management was planning to quit him once he joined after his recovery. The reason given to me was - as he would not be active as before for next few months till his fitness returns, the company doesn't wants to waste its time for this & have recruited me.

I wonder as this may happen to anyone including me in this organization & the company will do the same thing even to me also if Iam hospitalized.

Also 2 of my colleagues were forced to resign & they were now at their notice period. They are just 4 months old in this company & the management have threaten them as they would terminate them as the mgmt was not happy with their performance.

Even here I have a question of how a new person with only 4 months old in this company can prove himself to be an expert & how the management can decide that they are not upto their expectation level.

As Iam new to this MNC culture, kindly advice me should I continue in this organisation? I hold another offer with comparatively less salary. Due to this difference I've joined here. ALso guide me if I quit within 1 week itself after joining, is there any legal issues to be faced by me or else can I continue in the same organization itself.

1st Question - Who gave you the reason that you have been hired because someone's sickness or hospitalization, etc? Does the message come from the management or you just heard through some gossip and rumors?
Secondly, every company has the policy of Probation Period. That is the period to assess the basic attitude of an employee towards work, company policies and company culture and if they find that an individual is not a right fit, he can be terminated. Same applies to your colleagues that you are talking about. Company does not need years to judge your performance. And more than performance it is your attitude towards work that is judged.

Sanjeev has raised some questions and I will raise some more.
What do you mean by "I was recruited instead of ...."? If he was not recruited, who is paying his medical bills? As you are a new recruit to this company, do you think you will be entitled to sick leave? If you were the employer of a person who goes off sick, for whtever reason, for over two months, will you wait for the person to return or will you fill up the vacancy to get the work done to meet customers' requirement?
May we know how much work experience you have?

Whether it is MNC or Indian Company, the policies are same in this competitive world. No job security, you will have to perform or perish, and this is everywhere. Pon

@ Sanjeev - The company's HR manager gave me the reason as the existing employee [ in sick leave ] will be quited out upon his joining, of course with all his settlements.
@nashbramhall - In fact the medical bills have been paid by the insurance company which was having an corporate tie-up with our organization.
Iam having around more than 11 yrs of work experience in engineering companies.

Seek ur advice - whether can I continue here or else can go for the other job with less salary. This was not an MNC. Should I have to face any consequence if I quit within a week.

Greetings,

This discussion have raised and answered most of the question. Here are my thoughts, no matter whichever firm you work with:
  • Address you fears. You are bound to feel insecured , when you work for an organization with such a turbulence. You cant be working , let alone performing in a firm , that is not aligned with your values.
  • Having said that, what about the recognition and career progress on the firm. How does the management deal with the top and medium performers? What are the performance improvement program arranged by the Firm and initiated by the employee?
  • Consider it to be the competitiveness of the firm, to have strong reactions and low tolerance to any low-performer. Every company would work on these principles, with variations on the degree of implementations.
  • What have been the impact on the ones who have lost their jobs? Although, every situation is unique, but a balanced over view to the complete process would answer your fears.
  • Try and gain insights on the career path of the top performers, with a view to the time period they took to reach from one level to another and the learning scaled.
  • Once you know that, check your own preparations, through the training and projects that you have planned for.
  • The point is to make your self competitive , so that no matter wherever you work, you prosper. Plan you certifications and qualification upgrade in such a way, that no matter what, you remain employable.

Finally, if the firm hired you, they must have found you fit to deliver. Keep discussing your growth and learning with your reporting leaders. This should get you better than before. Wish you all the best !

Dear,
If you leave, the MNC will even not continue with the sick guy. They will rather hire another guy if you quit. A solution could be, you accept the challenge of this job and if possible, help out the Sick guy to adjust in the organization you have another offer from.

A very simple question: Has management conveyed this to you officially that you have been hired because of that person... or it has been conveyed by some one who is authorized to convey this to new employee as why he or she has been hired by the company.
Just relax and perform your duties well. In any organization these is always a tendency of employee either of the same department or group of employees to pass on these kinds of remarks or raise questions about the selection of some employee.
As regards to the person it is legal obligation of an organization to provide with medical cover/insurance to all those employees who do not come under ESIC scheme. It is good to know that your company is taking care of its employees.
Switching over is not the solution as it would lead to any gap in your CV which can effect your chances of getting good offer from other companies.
