Skill is the tool the get the work done. Cooking is a skill. Java is a skill. Project Management is a skill.
Technical Skills combined with soft-skills, behavior skills, cultural fittment gives the competence.
Doing the work is a skill. Doing the good work is a competence.
Getting a new client is a skill. Making that client buy your product/services is a comptence.

Hii,
I'd like to add something to this
In simple we can say
Competence -> Knowledge +Skill + Attitude. (Competence can be related to job performance or
improving one's performance)
Skill -> Expertise in doing a job. (Its a part of competency)

Hi,
Competence (or competency) is the ability of an individual to perform a job properly. A competency is a set of defined behaviors that provide a structured guide enabling the identification, evaluation and development of the behaviors in individual employees.
Skill:
An ability and capacity acquired through deliberate, systematic, and sustained effort to smoothly and adaptively carryout complex activities or job functions involving ideas (cognitive skills), things (technical skills), and/or people (interpersonal skills).
Both are different terms and Skill is an attribute within Competency. Comptency comprise of 3 elements such as Skill, Knowledge and Attitude.

Sub.: Difference between Skill and Competancy.
Skill a person acquires by vertue of his knowledge in understanding ,interest and doing the same type of job repeatedly. A person becomes more skillful by adding to his experience as he does the job again and again. This skill is confined to the person. Unless the person applies the acquired skill effectively he can not do a good job.
Competancy is the result part of effective application of skill. Only having the skill is a skilled person. Possessed skill may or may not reflect on job. Skill is hidden. Competancy is visible. Once a person does a job upto satisfaction level, we lable him as a competant person. Every skilled person may not be competant. But, any person doing a job perfectly could be competant.

I don\'t agree with Mr. Sanjeev!
I think skill is special knowledge to perform any work. And the ability to perform
any task successfully is competancy.Competancy is a broader term which include skills also.If I am having 5 skills like communication skill, Grammar, Listening skill etc. You can say I am competant enough to perform my job as a Soft skill Trainer. Its my personal view and I respect views of others.

Dear Rajeev,
Others have given you good answers and also suggestions. So, I will ask you a few questions before giving you some tips.
What do you do and in which industry? What is your background? Do you know how to search the web and have you heard of Wikipedia? The way you have responded to Sanjeev's response indicates that the question may have been an interview question.
I take this opportunity to state that we should give the source from where we cut/copy and paste, to avoid PLAGIARISM.
One of the responses is an example of copy and paste from http://wikipedia.org <link updated to site home> ) that has not given credit to the source. I found that Googling at http://wikipedia.org <link updated to site home> ) Hence, it pays to search the web first, as Aussiejohn keeps reminding us at CiteHR.

Skill is a inner core of competency. Establishing our skill in efficient and innovative way determines our competency.so they can not be apart but can be developed together.
