I have been working in IT industry since past 4 years and had my first job change...

I have had multiple offers due to the skill set I possess is niche... and moreover, I am a bit underpaid... which allows me to bring in benefit to the P&L for my managers...However, I don't understand why is it that the HR's are so agressive when it comes to the offer.. For a particular Indian IT company, HR said that they are going to blackout the case and not allow me to join any IT CMMI level 5 company :-S .. what the heck..!!!

They need to know that there are multiple reasons why I did not accept offer with them.. some that can be verbally spoken of and others that they need to understand themselves... (the HR can be rude.. some shout during the process for whatever reason ... )

One such case, the HR asks me for the joining date during the interview and I gave one when I can comfortably join any company.. that is a date after my relieving date with current employer.. However, HR says that you had confirmed joining us and want to turn back now :(... whats wrong here... I do not issue a mail to 'accept the offer' in case I am not willing to search any further...

Any suggestions on how can I approach this ? Is it incorrect to get multiple offers and decide between them.. ?

Can someone also suggest any good lines to mention in the mail while refusing the offer. (without any further negotiation)...

If you are saddled with multiple offers, you are bound to get confused. Anyway, you are the best judge to decide which offer most suits you. Pon

Try these lines next time:

"Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for offering me the position of .....(fill in the position's name) .... I am truly flattered with the opportunity to work for ....... (fill in the organisation's name) ....., however, due to unexpected changes in my personal circumstances I am unable to accept your offer at present.
Once again, I thank you for the confidence you've shown in me and I look forward to the same in the future.
Kind regards,
(YOUR NAME)"

Hey, you have right to seek multiple job offers, you can accept or refuse them as per your options and likings, however respond to the offer as soon as possible withing prescribed time limit, Also once you accept the offer and confirm the joining date, please try and not back out.

HRs are usually under stress to close the positions, most of the time when staff requisitions comes to HR, the urgency level was like "required yesterday" so that is why few HRs may be pushy. But you need to focus on your requirements, whatever is the case, keep communication clear.

You may refer to the draft for responding to offer letters :

Dear Mr. / Ms. ABC

I m very grateful and honored to have received the offer letter from your esteemed organization. However on subsequent conversation with my manager and on insistence from the current management. I have decided to continue with the current organization. As there are difficulties regards to notice period and contractual obligations. I would not be able to accept the offer made.

I thank you for your time and efforts. I apologize for the inconvenience caused. Looking forward to interact with you in future on a good note.

Thank you.. I'll refer your draft and understand that I need to keep the HR's informed.
However, stress is what people feel under every vertical... be it HR, finance, IT.... if you count on me.. I'll say work we do is far more stressful and it would be other way round for any HR. I am sorry but unable to justify HR's 'shouting' over the call when I'm being open on my joining next month.. for an offer that was not 'accepted' by mail.. and requested more information on :(
All I am not able to justify is the above and to see a mail that read 'we are not going to allow you join any CMMI level 5 company and upload your resume in all HR portals' :-S, that too from a top Indian IT reputed MNC, actually not Indian... its now acquired and US based.

I agree with you. Shouting or threatening is not acceptable. However its a personal behavior, that HR must be realy cheesed off, professionally HRs or any one has to accept rejection very politely.

Regarding recieving an offer, by mail or in person, you can always clarify with concerned HR regarding any particular clause or terms which you want to be clear about. However clarify all your doubts before signing on the dotted line and committing a joining date.

After offer is recieved dont take too much time, 1 - 3 days is fine, its enough time to think about the opportunity to take it or leave it. Respond well on time, and preferably through E mail.

However after accepting the offer and committing the joining date, if one change thier mind and go for something else, and dont inform HRs at all, dont turn up on joining date, this would irritate HRs.

Dont worry about blacklisting and stuff, unless you have absconded from regular employment or breached employment contract.

Just an advise - you mentioned that, you are seeking multiple job offers, as you believe that you have niche skills sets. What I suggest is dont go too much shopping, when you give many interviews and offered, you may be rejecting them for next better offer, you will be unfamously get known in the HR circles, gettin multiple offers may be giving you a good feeling, but as the famous saying goes - " A bird in the hand is better than 2 in the Bush"

However you know your choices best, just suggesting dont mind please.
