although there is a full fledged law" Maternity Benefit Act". However, in most of the orgnaisation( whether small/medium/large and whether Indian or MNC) the benefits under this act is not extended to women employees. Either in such cases as soon as it is learnt that the women is poregnant, steps are taken to ensure that she is sent out as soon as possible. Accidently, if the women employee continue to work, she is flatly refused the benfit or is threatened in soft language.

You may take up a comparative study in various industries on Extension of Maternity benefit act. However, you will Have to ensure that your questionnaire covers the minutest and indepth aspect of the benefit part of the act, as both the women employee as well as Employer is likely to cheat you. Put lot of questions each contradictory to other after a certain number of questions in the questionnaire and try to get answers to each of them.

Similarly another worth topic is Wage difference

I do not think you have a reason to fear! Most of the organizations employing women are aware about legal provisions and keep themselves immune from that. However, since you are doing ti for a project, I think you should concentrate on both primary and secondary data. For women employees there are certain topics, which are covered by law, study the adherence pattern of them and you will get a trend (some of the data will be available with the statistical department). The areas are: -

1. Factories Act (Employment of women employees, provision for creche etc)

2. Shops & Estalishment Acts of various states (regarding working hours, car provisions etc)

3. Maternity Benefit Act and ESI Act (for maternity benefit, extension of maternity leave etc)

4. Equal Remunerations Act

5. Salary agreement of various unions, especially where women employees are employed

On the non/ para statutory areas, look for: -

1. Corporate governance (for sexual harrasments, discremenation etc.)

2. Policies governing women employees

I think this should give you some data to work on.

You are doing the same mistake as other students do. You have not given enough information about the scenario. For example, will you be conducting the study in a single organisation? If so, how large is the organisation? What category of workers are the 50 to 70 members that you can access? Does the company have any problems that they would like you to address? Any project you do in an organisation should be of benefit to them too.
