In the following situation hw to give earthing to tanker
: solvent Tanker if met an accident and consumer arranged another empty tanker to transfer the solvent that time hw to give earthing to tankers.

First I say thanks to u. You are the one raise questions in our EHS forum I appreciate your interest.Sorry for the late reply. . .
All flammable liquid / solvent containers trucks have earthing facility you check with fuel container trucks then u know (Please find the attached photo).
But in this case it’s different. This situation u remember one thing all flammable liquid / solvent container trucks have earthing facility. If truck met an accident u want to transfer fuel in this time u will check the nearest earthing point or location if u get u connects with earthing then u start transfer flammable liquid / solvent. If u not get any point or location near accident area u will arrange earthing rod put on the ground then u connect with earthing rod. It’s the easiest & safest way. . .

Before giving answer to this question i would like clarify the need of earthing:
Earthing of any tanker/Vessel need to equal the pottential difference between the earth & Tanker becouse of static charge accumulate during movement & transfer of liquid/gas.
Now if you are tranferring the the material from one tanker to another tanker the procedure said in photos is ok if both of the tanker is earthed. or you may connect both tanker together to reduce the difference of pottential.

yes you are right. Before we transfer flammable liquid / solvent need to equal the potential difference between the earth & Tank. . .
Sr.Electrical engg command on this case:::
In this case he advised to bond the earthing cable together (truck to truck) then connect with earthing rod. Its the easiest & safest way. . .
Vino then u remember one thing if vehicle under repair we can transfer flammable liquid / solvent just we check the earthing or grounding / they use right type of equipment to transfer the flammable liquid / solvent (like hose...)But if vehicle met an accident fire department guys only responsible to transfer the flammable liquid / solvent
• As per OSHA & EM-385 its cover basic earthing or grounding only
• If u want to briefly check with fire engg guys / petrochemical guys. Fire dept guys have different or high standard procedure for this process. . .

Connect the earth to an earthing rod & this rod should be buried to ground. Do this for both the tankers independently. Bonding should be carried out seperately to the tanker hose for electrical continuity to prevent static build up. Your electrical engineer is the competent person to advise the best practice on this matter.

Nice and we are really on to an interesting topic. The discussion is in the right direction.

Here may I ask you few simple questions about the tanker earthing ?

Is its resistance ever measured ?

And if so what was the result?

What is the maximum resistance it can have for effectiveness ?

What depth we have to drive that rod to get that reading for effectiveness?

Those in construction use copper rods with clamps to do the earthing. Quite often we can just pull out the rod easily or the rod will be slanting, or not driven beyond two to three inches for the hard ground. Those rods are usually not driven deeper enough to provide required earthing. Again in the desert the sand is quite dry and often hot. An earthing for the sake of earthing !

Let us clarify and have the best out of the discussion. I earnestly request youngsters in the field to involve. Let it be foolishness you post but only connected with the topic under discussion.Please spell out your understanding. Someone knowledgeable in the forum will definitely help us to improve ourselves.

Thanx for monitor us . As tanker having a tommy ( Iron Rod ) , wires and having some water carboy too (to wet the earthing pit area ) , can they use it as emergency earthing arrangement?.

Dear All,
The topic under discussion is really ineteresting,I would like to only add that in all cases it is always to be ensured that static electricity and the electrical potential should be zero on all parts of tankers in question.For this to happen a proper earthing arrangement is required with thick and most conductive material to keep the earthing resistance as low as possible or =/< the value prescribed depending on the type of fuel to transferred.
Hope this helps to some extent. Values of earth resistance be known through the Indian electricity rules for this perticular section of topic.

Dear All

Great particiaption from all of you in the thread... Good and apprciable one...

I have never came across more on the topic... Diesal & HCL is coming to our plant on such tankers... We are ensureing earthing before tranfer of the same into the tanks... After gone through the entire discussions now I feels the importance of this... I remember those early days in the starting of our plant, we were transferring diesal and all from tanker to tank without even fixing an earthing... Even when talk to driver of the tanker he was aware of the fact that the tanker need to be earhted but just neglecting the same as nobody forces him to do so and aslo there was no arragement...

Now let me share my understanding on the topic and expecting to get the right answers.

Tanker resistance ever measured ? = No. Please let me know, how we can measure the resistance of tanker? (Chemical Handling or Diesal Handling Tanker)

And if so what was the result? - Never did such resistance test.

What is the maximum resistance it can have for effectiveness ?

Resistiance is basically between two points. Between which to points you are measuring resistance? Resistance for effective earthing shall be less than 2 ohms. 0.8 ohm is the ideal value.

What depth we have to drive that rod to get that reading for effectiveness?

It depends on soil resistivity, No. of electrodes used for grid etc. As a common practice we used to drive depth upto which grond soil retain its moisture even in peak summer. Soil moisture hepl in homozeneous connectivity of electrode with earth mass and hence help in getting low eartrh resistance. You can say more than 03.00 mtr.

Now can anyone please help me in answering the following few questions.

1. What should be the ideal material used as earthing rod & connecting materail between earthing rod & tanker for effective earthing?

2. Suppose Storrage Tank is earthed to one earth pit. Can we connect the tanker earth to the same earth pit?
