Dear Nathan,

I am happy to note that you are seeking help from this forum.

Being a safety man you have to at least learn the basics of electricity to understand the information you seek. From your question it is clear as to where you stand and hence the advice. Do not get upset with the remark. I expect you to definitely post your doubts freely without getting upset about criticism. Among the forum members very many are here just seeking pleasure in helping others. I can realize your predicament on seeing this reply. Take it with the spirit of a learner. It will help you in the long run.

Let me try to clarify it for you:-

1. You can not convert ampere to HP. (Ampere is the unit to measure current only. Not for measuring energy or power.)

2. You can not convert HP to KV. (KV is the unit for measuring Voltage only. K stands for Kilo - meaning 1000.)

KVA has to be converted to KW for which another item “power factor “should be known.

Once you have the KW reading divide it by 0.746 to convert it to HP.

(I HP = 746 watts or 0.746 KW)

Hope it is of some help to you.

Dear Reghuvaran,
Appreciate your participation and thank you for the attached table .
Now kindly try to help him with his question.
Help him with regard to 1. To convert amphere to HP,HP to KV etc., or
answer him 1KVA = how much HP, He also needs to know about 1000KV = how much HP
Please put your efforts in hitting the target.

Dear Raghu,
Thanks again for your participation. Your posting of the useful links on electrical conversion table is well received. With all those beautiful conversion tables provided by you I find it quite difficult if not impossible to do the following exercise and seek your help in just converting :-
(1) ampere to HP
(2) HP to KV
(3) 1 KVA to HP
(4) 1000 KV to HP
Hope you can help…

Dear Sir,

Ampere to Horsepower::

Amps or A = Ampere is a unit for measuring electric intensity (I). Horsepower (= HP) is a unit for measuring the power (P) of an engine

So for example: P=200 HP and I=5.2 A

Those two are totally different and irrelevant to each other.

----------------------------------------------------

Not entirely true. Amps are a factor in calculating power, and so can be used to determine horsepower, but only when other factors are present.

Given other factors, you can find the horsepower. The easiest way is to determine watts by multiplying amps X volts. Next multiply watts by .00134 and you have horsepower.

If: amps (A)= 20 and volts (V)=120 then

A X V =2400 watts (W)

2400 watts X .00134 = 3.216 horsepower

--------------------------------------

To add a further wrinkle:

Horsepower is a measurement of OUTPUT power

Amps generally refers to the flow of current (not intensity as stated above - that is voltage) which is an INPUT of an electric motor

So to accurately compute how much horsepower an electric motor will PRODUCE you need to know the efficiency of that motor. Electric motors tend to be very efficient but not quite 100%.

So, multiply efficiency by the theoretical hp using the formula above to get your final answer.

HP to KV::

1 Kw equals 1.36 hp. So, Kw x 1.36 = hp

KVA to HP:::

1 HP = 0.9325 kVA

1 KVA = 1/0.9325 HP

1000 KV to HP:::

British System:-

746W = 1 H.P.

1000W (1 kW) = (1000 / 746) H.P. = 1.34 H.P.

Metric System:-

735.5W = 1 H.P.

Dear Friend,
Thank you very much for your earnest attempt to clear my doubts though not touching the questions raised.
Can I just conclude now by stating that my answers to Mr.Nathan was right by every measure or is there any error for me to correct.
Being a safetyman I yearn for short and straight answer if possible please.

Kesava Pillai
