Passion /Motivation

The passion to achieve or take the task was there in both. Bhuvan wanted to save the villagers from the land taxes as there had been a drought and people were in a pitiable condition.

Kabir Khan also wanted to clear his name as he was accused of being a traitor and unpatriotic.

Learning

You need a cause to be motivated/passionate about something. It could be to prove or to achieve something or to change the condition, situation or circumstances

Objective/Purpose

Bhuvan had the objective forced on him to win the cricket match as per the condition imposed by Capt. Russell so the players were aligned to the common goal since the beginning of the game while in Chak De everybody was playing for different reasons/regional loyalty and it was an effort and quiet a task to gel them together to a common goal that is play for the country and win the world cup.

Learning

Find an objective or purpose to realize the cause. For Bhuvan the option was to agree to Captain Russel's condition and win the match while for Kabir Khan, it was to regain his reputation by winning the world cup for the country.

Leadership style

Bhuvan was a hands on leader who motivated and inspired his team members by his personal performance whether batting or bowling . He was first among the equal as far as the team was concerned while Kabir Khan had to inspire and motivate the team from outside. He could not contribute directly and had to watch from the sidelines.

Learning

You need to be aware of the circumstances and the constraints and adapt your leadership style accordingly. Bhuvan had to become a lot more involved in the game, while Kabir Khan had to maintain some distance and being strict as he was the coach

Challenges

Both faced enormous opposition from the others Right from the start when the entire village opposes Bhuvan’s having taken up the challenge to the time when the rest of his team refuses to play because he wants to take in an untouchable in the team.

Kabir also faced enormous opposition to derision when he decided to coach the women’s hockey team from the derision of the administrators to the initial cancellation of the entry to the world cup.

Learning

In the journey towards success.. there will always be people who will discourage and be non believers. The key is to have self belief and perseverance. Listen to everybody but do what you believe in.

Strategy/tactics

Both the leaders Bhuvan and Kabir Khan had to fight enormous odds to win the game. Though Kabir Khan had the required knowledge and expertise he had to transfer it to his students, while Bhuvan had to learn the required skills himself and then also train others in the team. The challenge for Bhuvan was different as he was one of them and his skills and expertise were also as limited as the others, so he had to learn and demonstrate simultaneously. The help from the English lady who was also the sister of Captain Russel increased his credibility.

Kabir Khan had to instill self belief and team spirit into the team. The McDonald incident, wherein the boys eve teased the girls in the team came as Godsent for him to instill team spirit and then the match against the boys team gave the team a lot of confidence.

Learning

Do a SWOT analysis and work out the customized strategy based on the circumstances and resources available. Traditional methods do not work in extraordinary situations. Be creative and innovative

Dealing with difficult team members

Bhuvan and Kabir Khan both had to face the players who tried to undercut them. Bhuvan had Raka who was Captain Russell's informer and deliberately dropped catches to help the English man, while Kabir Khan had Bindiya - a former captain who was playing against the team.

Bhuvan and Kabir without any ego and malice gave a second chance and imposed their faith on the accused players against the popular opinion. Ultimately, these team members became committed and contributed their best.

Learning

Each team member is different, you should adopt horses for courses policy to motivate and inspire them
