Hi Nancy

There are 2 parts to your request. The first is a welcome speech and the second is a script for the event.

Let me begin with the second part of your request.

A script for an anchor would depend on the plan for the event, the time frame, the theme / style of the script and the comfort level of the anchor. E.g. You may want to use humor as predominant theme (as they do at film award functions) but unless the anchor is comfortable with this style it will be a disaster.

Your script will have to ensure that there is a pattern and flow of the awards, the events in between and the the script must also seamlessly juxtapose the time element too. Also ensure that you have one liners, a quote or two, some dramatic announcements etc. incorporated so as to get both audience attention and keep the interest level high.

Coordination with the support team is critical so that all the awards are properly identified and marked out back stage, a person put in charge of coordinating getting the right memento on stage to be handed over to the guest distributing the awards etc.

If possible have a full fledged dress rehearsal with dummy awardees to work out the time element and also to iron out the niggles that may become apparent.

The Welcome speech:

This is relatively simpler since it is up to you to decide the flow and style of the speech. This must set the tone for the subsequent events of the evening and must be in sync with the overall theme and style.

The speech must refer to the importance of the evening, give a broad overview to the audience what to expect and build up a tempo of anticipation and excitement. The speech must welcome the chief guest, acknowledge the presence of special dignitaries if any and appreciate the audience for their presence.

I am sure that using these guidelines you can work out both the speech and the script and despite your inhibitions you will get a tremendous sense of satisfaction. Get both the speech and the script proof read and whetted by one or two other individuals who have good language skills and or some experience as an anchor or organizer.
