Hi All we all know bout succession planning.... Wat i want to know is how can one ensure that the guy they are taking into consideratioon for succession planning is the right kind of a guy because normally succession planning is done foe very high posts like that of the level of a ceo. So it becomes very important to be rest assured that the right guy is being given the aid for succession planning......With so many talented people in every organisation ahving more or less the same skill set how to pick that one correct guy ?????

Dear Khyat,

Well I agree with you, that Succession planning is done for very high posts, i.e usually leadership profiles, and to choose one person, amongst so many possessing similar skills is a tough task. My advice here would be that take is as in case of hiring someone for the simple post like a 'secretary' you would notice that you have 1000's who can do the job well and 1000 more who can do it better.

Though I am not comparing a CEO with a Secy but just giving you a example that as everyone is indispensable and you always have someone better who can perform the job in more optimum manner...but we cant give everyone a chance right ? Similarly though you'll have a lot of people who might be eligible for the new higher role (or a developmental plan like succession planning) but you need to judge on the set basis your organization has and give someone a chance. You would be write and wrong at time, but still you'll just need to follow the set norms (basis qualification, experience, performance, ability to manage people, leadership quality, futurity prospect and so on...)

Hope it helps....do write back in case you want to know something specific.

Regards,

Ash
