The decision to join back the same company really depends on what grounds or the manner you have left it in the first place.
If you have left in a cordial manner, with valid reasons and during your tenure has been a good performer, I am quite sure the company would welcome you back. But if the opposite holds true, I doubt the company would even want to entertain this avenue.
I have seen many cases where the resigned employees returned back to the company to hold higher position as the additional exposure & experience away brings additional value to the company.

I don't understand why you can't join your previous company once again. There are lots of advantages viz you know the work culture, environment, people very well. This is the place where you reinvent yourself and you can see the impact also. If you are joining in a senior position you know what should be/can be done to improvise on certain matters.
As long as perceptions of the colleagues is concerned,it is a case of seeking other's approval. If you belong to that personality this will remain true even if you join work at a new place.
Justify your action to yourself and outcome will justify rest all.

Thanks Giriamitha, You have given a different thought. I think you are right but how to deal with the colleagues. my friend is feeling some nervousness in facing his colleagues.

I completely agree with Girimatha....But this holds good only if they ask u to join them back. If you ask them that u would like to join them back their will be lot many issues which may arise (salary will not be matched, They might take u for ride etc...).

For example, there is a piece on the web by Jackowski on the subject in question at <link no longer exists - removed>
There was piece in the Hindu Newspaper at The Hindu : Rejoining old employer as long ago as 2004.
