Good topic again... Thanks in advance...
In my opinion PPE is the last defence/means of protection... PPE individually can't do much more help in accident prevention... But definitly by providing quality PPE the workers will mentally feel safe and by that the, work itself will get safe, faster and the result is high production...

Dear Dipil,
We have to make certain not just an opinion. Safety people are to advise employees and management whether certain method, equipment or plant is safe or not for sure. In most cases safety has to say yes it is safe to work in this condition.
Kindly address all the uses of ppe too.

Its not just an opinion, we can't relay only on PPE's only. Its the last defence. Its the secondory protection means.
As a primory protection means we should go for good working platform, engineering controls, ect.
Use of PPE's... Say first of all it will increese the confidence of the worker... And job specific PPE's are very much required for almost all the jobs...
Like Safety Googles for Cutting, Grinding, Welding, Chipping Works... Its really need for that work... Or else one's eye may get damage...
Hand Gloves : Very much required for Material Handling, Hot Works, Etc.
Safety Footwear: A compulsory basic PPE for Industries who is having concern about safety. Also a standard one can give specific protection to specific hazards.
Safety Helmet: Same as a compulsory basic PPE for Industries who is having concern about safety.
Safety Harness: Compulsory for above 02.00m height works. ETC...
Hope my idea about PPE's is somewhat clear... Hope this discussion can make it more clear...

PPe is last line of defence. They cant prevent accidents but can protect u from some accident.

From the ppt one question! Is there any air purifing respirator for H2S ? It is mentioned so in the presentation. If available I would like to know which country succeeded in making one and how many minutes it can be used and at what concentration.
Your answer "they can't prevent accident" is well accepted. The rest "but can protect you from some accident" is unwarrented. It gives an indication that you are still in doubt.
The first question still remains unanswered. Kindly make an attempt to answer that too pl.

Thank you for the post. You need not bother. For H2S - escape only type airpurifying respirators are available. That too is not dependable. As such there is no air purifying respirator for H2s to my knowledge.
I recently had a bitter experience with ARAMCO. Saudi Arabia. In their DHT project on excavating, H2S started filling up the area. Reading was quite high. Aramco insisted that up to 50 ppm workers can work with cartridge type respirator and work need not be suspended. I had to openly shout at them that I will not be a party to kill workers and the type is not designed for H2S. Finally they agreed with me and heavy mechanicl ventilation was used to clear the area before permit was issued.

Even after you provide the ventilation, if still the H2S conc. found more than 50ppm, whats the next option? Shall we give up the job as there is no suitable PPE? Whats the best engineering controls if found H2S in any deep excavations than PPE?
