First jot down all points in your favour for salary hike -
1 a) Your Qualifications
b) Your experience elswhere
c) Your contributions in the present Organization
d) Significant achievements made by you in the present
Organization.
e) How your present salary is not matching upto industry standards.
f) The present inflationary indices.
2 Then with these data with you, choose a right time and first discuss orally with your boss and convince him.
3 You may know his mind, after your discussion with him.
4 My suggestion is instead of writing mails, you may think of
achieving your objective by oral discussion with higher ups.

Greetings,
I second your opinion on talking about the hike rather than writing a formal letter.
A discussion with the reporting manager, sharing an interest to seek feedback would yield much higher result than a document.
A letter should be preferred, when it is required as a part of the process.
I look forward to hear what our other members feel about this.
