what is the difference between offer letter & appointment letter? If we have appointment letter then is there any probation period..thanks
From India, Bangalore
Its very simple...you don't need to be expert...just a "common sense" will do. Offer Letter is "Offering the Job"... it is upto candidate to accept the offer and join your organization. It talks about position and CTC. "Appointment Letter" is when the person joins the organization. You need to mention probation period in both....offer as well as appointment letter.
These days...most of the companies give only "appointment letters".

Hi Manju,
Offer letter typically conveys Company's interest in the candidate- Level/Title , Gist of Salary & Benefits and date by whish the employee is expected to join. Offer letter usually is one/two page document.
Employment Letter typically is the next level document wherein more details of the service conditions [including probation period], elaboration of the key policies [eg leave, medical] Integrity & Discipline , Benefits etc. are mentioned.
Employment letter is issues when the candidate joins the Organization.
Hope this helps.
Cheers !

Hi,
In my opinion the difference in these two is:-
Offer letter includes the invitation of the job with some required document for the joining on the first day and the CTC.
Appointment Letter includes all the terms and condition of the services Like, CTC, Probation Period etc.

Hi
per my understanding goes, Offer Letter is a formal documents which depicts Company's interest in Individual, it also speaks about Compensation and agreed doj. To restate the same " Offer letter is summarized Appointment Letter".
The Appointment letter is a formal document higlighting the above said components of Offer letter and also carries the snapshots of Company's Policy.
Getting an Appointment letter doesn't mean the individual will be on probation. Incase the Company has probation period , its clearly indicated on Appointment letter, and it would further details, the term of Probation, Confirmation norms.

Dear manju,
Offer letter encompasses of details like
1. date of joining,
2.reporting authority
3. Terms and conditions
4. Salary not detailed
However appointment letter is the detailed document wherin salary and its all components are mentioned like Hra, cca,ta etc. you need not mention these details in offer letter

Dear Manju,
Put simply, Offer Letter states an intention of the company to "offering" a particular position at a particular grade at a particular salary level to the prospective employee. It includes a clause that if the prospect accepts that particular offer of the company, the prospect has to join by so-and-so date.
Where as, appointment letter is a firm letter / contract of employment entered into by both the company and the employee wherein most of his terms of employment and contract are clearly spelt out, to name a few, his designation, his CTC (incl. its break-up), the major policies in place, his role and responsibilities.
While an offer letter has no legal standing, an appointment letter has legal authority in that if there is any variance better the stated terms in the appointment letter and the actual occurance, the same can be contested in a court of law / labour.
Hope this clarifies your doubt.

Hi Every One!
Though the issue has been discussed quite fairly, and don't need any further clarification. But let me summarize all the discussion.
As a candidate gets finalized by the organization, then s/he is communicated a proper response stating the position, location, grade, compesation and benefits etc by the company.
Once the candidate accepts the offer then s/he is being given the official appointment letter stating all the above along with the rest of the terms and conditions of the employement.
As far as Probation is concern, it has nothing to do with Offer and / or appointment letter. Probation is a different topic that may or may not be discussed in Offer letter, but its a definite part of appointment letter.

Hi,
When an organization gives an Offer letter to a candidate, it means the Org selected the candidate. Now the candidate can accept or refuse the Offer. Offer letter includes Position, Grade, Salary, and Location etc.
Appt. Letter issued by the Org when candidate joined the Org, which includes term of employment like Probation, Salary Structure, Job responsibility (Sometimes), Agreement (if any), Leaving rules, Discipline rules, Termination rules, other term and condition ect.
