Dear
in my opinion one must have knowledge of Labour Laws which works with HR department. While preparing HR policies we have to kept in mind the respective labour law if applicable fot that particular subject.

This is not mandatory to do formal degree or certification but knowledge of employment laws and government administration system is advantage to become perfect and self sufficient. I have not done Law but I read many laws and judgements that gave me advantage to tell my advocate on what legal grounds we can file petition instead of Lawyer telling us whether case is contestable or not contestable.

While I would also join the good advisors in saying yes, its important, may I qualify this by adding that if you really are not looking to earn you bread & butter handling IR & Admin then the best perhaps is to find out checklists (plenty of downloads in this site) for ensuring compliance and focus on what is required for compliance. An experienced industry person can also tell you as to which sections of which acts/ rules are important from the compliance point of view. This would perhaps be better than trying to mug up entire bare acts. But if you do decide to delve deep, go through case histories, its a different and interesting world out there which even the most law-averse person might grow to enjoy.

You asked in your post whether Labour laws and Admin laws are important for an HR ( Assume it is HR Dept. employee). If you are serious about HR profession, definitely you must have the expertise ( Not knowledge alone) in both areas, where you must excel in labour laws and exemplary in Admin laws. So do both subjects well.
