Hi,
I am an MBA in HR with 2+ yyrs of experience as an HR- generalist. But i would like to get into training and development i.e soft skills and behavioural training. How do i get into that field as all companies are asking for trainers with prior experience? Also, do i need to do any certificate course to become a certified trainer? Kindly advice.

Why Behavioural T & D is preferred over the ordinary?
Behaviour is at the root of all actions and the behaviour that we notice of people in different situations is nothing but a symptom. Be it anything and anyone – children to adults, employees to employers, students to teachers, trainees to trainers, customers to sellers all of them display certain behaviours. These behaviours may be positive or negative and invariably results in provoking emotions of either person or quite often both.

Productivity and Performance of all people at all stages in one’s life is an outcome of one’s behaviour. This behaviour is propelled by one’s attitude. But the concrete wall-like attitude by itself is a result of glue-like mindsets and die-hard habits. My personal experience (on taking up a training profile) has been that if possible one should experience the trainee side much often to know where it hurts (read, needs) the most.

Being in HR Generalist profile will help you understand lot of such things very easily. You need to watch HOW and WHY people behave the way they do. A behaviour training cannot be generalized for all types of people applicable at all times. It needs to be custom framed for each organization keeping a strong influence of the prevailing work culture and work habits. And to get that understanding, one needs to stick around in an organization for a stable period of time, make your observations, convert those to your personal learning, step into other's shoes to feel the pain, identify what their job demands, identify the need and accordingly devise a solution. That solution then needs to get converted to a training program, that you will be able to deliver because you LIVED the system and did not copy the solution from the internet.

Summary:

1. Continue to gain expereince in your field
2. Wacth behaviors
3. Analyze HOW and WHY of behaviors
4. Identify the solution

And yes, it always helps to get certified in training & development. One also needs to develop the art of deliverying training.

for pursuing career in training & development you need to have experience. I do agree with Raj, that attend as much training as you can. then try to find out the problems in general employees. watch them how they work, behave, react etc.
other than that you can do a diploma course from ISTD(Indian Society for Training & Development), Delhi. it provide distance course in Training & development and have more than 18 centers in India. this is a best government recognized center for diploma in training.
if you want to do any course then don't waste your money in other institute.

Hi,
get hold of a mentor, and start doing a lot of free programme. This is the only way to start, you can lokk at all the diplomas once you are comfortable on delivery. ( suggesion keeping in mid that you want to be a trainer). dont waste your time and money on any train the trainer programmes initially. they will help only when you start training.
